Melanie Helena Photography & Design Mon, 23 May 2016 21:02:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Hummingbird Battle Fri, 26 Jun 2015 17:22:05 +0000 Everyday, from dawn until dusk, beginning in the spring and ending in the fall, an ongoing battle of epic proportions takes place. Three of my four hummingbirds are males. They’re pretty temperamental and very territorial. I’ve tried putting up more feeders but it just makes everything worse. Imagine hummingbirds in hyperdrive. The littlest hummingbird, a shy female, gets squawked at and scared away all throughout the day. She barely has a chance to sit on the feeder perch for a few seconds.

But not today. She held her little hummingbird ground and I was fortunate enough to capture the whole battle.

(spoiler alert)

It ended in her victory.

Patiently Waiting Sat, 09 May 2015 01:56:34 +0000 I only had the feeder up for about 5 minutes before I heard the familiar buzzing sound of my little hummingbird buddy. Guess he was waiting for me.

Christmas in New York City Mon, 29 Dec 2014 21:52:23 +0000 All I wanted to see was The Tree and I’ve always wanted to visit New York, especially around Christmas. We took the early train and spent the day being tourists. I’ll never forget the sweet smell coming from the roasted peanut carts or the blurred faces of the people rushing by in the crosswalks. I fell in love with the architecture, the part it played in building the horizon and how it seemed to protect everyone within its walls. We stopped at a few pubs, ate some amazing food, took a trip on the subway and a horse and carriage ride through Central Park. On the train home, I fell asleep on his shoulder.

Delilah’s Second Birthday Fri, 31 Oct 2014 17:25:20 +0000 Little Delilah turned 2 years old on Halloween. Her mom did such a good job making sure everything was perfect for her little princess. All of the kids dressed up and I think their favorite part of the party was tearing down the balloon tower. Delilah lost a sock somewhere along the way. Too cute.

Random Summer Storm Thu, 02 Oct 2014 19:05:56 +0000 One of the things I missed most about Maryland is the amount of random summer thunderstorms. I’m happy to be back home. Wait for it…

Beach Drive Thu, 22 May 2014 01:10:26 +0000 I grew up in Maryland, mostly at a my Grandparents house on Beach Drive. My brother and I spent our summer days running up and down the beach with a worn shrimp net, looking for minnows, pirate treasure and sunfish houses. The five crooked, wooden, algae covered steps that led back up to the pier were only safe when the tide had been out for a while and they had a chance to dry out. We would barely let 20 minutes go by before we pulled up the crab traps after my Grandfather had just baited them. I remember watching my bother and Grandfather fish off of the pier while my Grandmother mumbled bad words under her breath while trying to pull up of all of the poison ivy that had taken over her flowers on the hills. At night, we would grab an old net pole, sit on the end of the pier and stir around the comb jelly fish to make them light up. It was like magic back then. We learned how to fish, we learned how to drive a boat, we learned how to shrimp off of the pilings, we learned how to dive, we learned that the best memories are from the most simple times and most importantly, we learned how much our Grandparents influenced our lives.

Mount Charleston Sat, 19 Oct 2013 21:49:40 +0000 Two weeks ago, we took a little trip to Mount Charleston in Northern Nevada. It’s only about 20 minutes from our house. I had no idea how drastic the scenery and temperature would be once we got there.  The air was so clean and refreshing. The evergreens and Birch trees made me feel like I was back home in Maryland.  As soon as we had driven as high as we could and thought we’d begin our trip back down, the sudden u-shaped road took us to a parking lot full of cars in back of a bustling log cabin restaurant. All I could smell was bacon and for some reason that bacon smelled better than any bacon I’ve ever smelled before. I don’t know, maybe it was the chilly air, the sound of people talking over breakfast, the view from the mountain top, the fact that it was a chilly 50 degrees, the fact that I was instantly taken to early fall back home, the yellow leaves from the changing Birch trees, or maybe it was just the combination of it all. Whatever it was, I smiled at George and couldn’t help but to close my eyes and take a long…drawn…deep…breath. We walked around the tiny gift shop inside of the restaurant until we decided to drive around a little more. We the spent the rest of the afternoon mumbling the words to songs we thought we knew, driving up and down winding roads and exploring the mountain like we were Lewis and Clark.
